Found an advert in my local are on Craigslist for an MBP (15.4/2.8/500/8 GB) for $850. Selling New in box.

When i sent an email, got a reply; turns out that it seems to be more a store advert. Asked how many units I wanted to buy, where I was located. Whatever.

Here is the specs list she quoted back to me:
MacBook Pro

Condition: NEW

15-inch: 2.8GHz
Intel Core 2 Duo
8GB Memory
500GB hard drive1
ExpressCard/34 slot
Built-in 8-hour battery2
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 512MB
Illuminated keyboard

See the problem?

I though the last generation of pre-unibodies had the ExpressCard slot, but when the uni bodies rolled around, the slot got bumped to only the 17" models. Also, I have just realized that an SD card slot is not listed.

So what the hell is up here?

Anyone who can shed light on this situation wins one free internet and an e-hug.

maybe if you knew the real specs... it most likely will not have 8gb ram and 500gb hd if it is the 2008 model... i haven't even seen many 2009 models with 8gb ram for sell...

Well i mean, given that I was planning to spend $1700 for a (13.3/2.53/2GB/250) this seems a killer deal.

true. $850 is a bargain but just check out the specs and find out what exactly you are getting before you make the deal.

ps. i was just looking at more of the stats and the 8 hr battery is only on the 17in right? if i'm wrong i'm ok with that too... :)

This sounds a bit fishy, the 8 hr battery did make it to the other models besides the 17in, but switched out the expresscard for the sd card slot

I'd look elsewhere

Thats valid. I am definitely waiting for more info from the seller; that goes without saying...

But even if it is not the eight hour battery, i dont much care. This is intended to be my main computer; I am not much of a road warrior.
But if you are right, i really want to know why the seller listed that one.

If this were true I would tell you to take the offer immediately, however, I assure you this is a scam of some sort. There's no way you are going to find that good of a deal on a new mbp, I would doubt you could find an old model with those specs for that price.

Sadly, the situation has only gotten sketchier.

Turns out the as was placed by an ad aggregator for a Third part based in the UK.

The specs that they have been quoting me changes from message to message.

And now they want me to confirm the order and pick BLACK OR WHITE for the system color.

I am now chatting with a rep over gmail, but I dont see imminent salvation anywhere.

Right so the chat didn't go to well:
9:41 PM me: Hello
9:45 PM ukcomputerltd: hi
me: so did you get my latest email?
about the 8 hour battery and the system color?
9:46 PM ukcomputerltd: yes we did get it
9:47 PM yes it comes with 8 hours long lasting battery
it comes with the black and siver colours
9:48 PM me: so why has the system speed increased from 2.66 GHz to 2.8 GHz? Was that an ad inaccuracy?
9:49 PM ukcomputerltd: we have the 2.66ghz and 2.8ghz
specs
9:50 PM we have 13 inch,15inch and the 17inch in stock for sell

(The engrish, buck shot sales techniques and all other inconsistancies thus far have finally caused me to make up my mind.)

me: I think i am going to go somewhere else. I prefer to deal locally in canada
thanks for your time.
9:51 PM ukcomputerltd: are you not interested in buying from us??
the delivery cost to CANADA is free
9:52 PM and we are a legit and registered company
you do not have anything to worry about buying from us
9:53 PM me: I really do not like dealing overseas. Even at this great price.
Thank you though
ukcomputerltd: why??
9:54 PM we offer the best products at cheap prices you can not beat else where
we deliver in 24hours
9:55 PM we can send you tracking proves of items being delivered to our customers....to prove to you we are a legit company
9:56 PM me: You know, i have made up my mind. I am not going to buy this system from you at this time. Thanks again.
Goodbye.

So in the end, this was a waste of time and excitement.

Thanks for encouraging my gut instinct of incredulity; you saved me from a scam, methinks. (Especially MacDawg)

Mods, feel free to close.

Edit:
hmmm...looks weird.
perhaps you can see the machine in person before buying?

In the UK :p
