Hi Guys

I am reformatting my old G4 iMac for my parents to have to replace their rather rubbish windows box.

It'll be their first mac and I'm lookng for free software recommendations - just stuff that will be useful for them. They'll be doing the usual stuff of web, email, photos etc

be sure to show them how to use iPhoto.
did they use FireFox on thier windows machine? that would help them out.
help them set up mail? or if they prefer and have it, Entourage.

stuffit should be installed if it isn't already.
explain .dmg's

trying to think of what else...

i thought the OP mentioned free software?

iPhoto (part of iLife) is not free
Entourage (part of MS Office 2004) is not free
Stuffit is not free (only a small part of it is) and it's not very good piece of software as it often cause trouble.

Betterzip is a far better decompress/compress utility, and if you were to buy it it's cheaper than the stuffit.

some version of ilife would've come with his computer if it came with OS X
i mentioned mail and only entourage if he had it
stuffit expander is free. and i've never had any trouble with it.

stuffit could cause finder to restart randomly, it's documented and i've recently experienced that myself before i had to remove stuffit completely. esp the latest versions

Thanks for all the advice guys.

It's running 10.4 and has iLife '06. They'll be hooked on iPhoto instantly.

NeoOffice is a good tip, I'll get hold of that. They used IE so I'll get them onto Safari for the time being.

I've never had any problems with the free bit of stuffit so I'll stick that on too.

The only problem is their contacts from Outlook. There's no easy way to transfer them over is there?

i haven't used Outlook in a very long time so i don't know, but look into what the export options for it are, Address book can import vcard and text files i know that... might be an option...

don't forget to get Flip4Mac as well, just remembered.

Flip4Mac! Totally forgot that one, cheers.

Thanks for the outlook hint too. :)
