I already have a 5.1 setup which I got with a DVD player, and I was thinking of replacing just the DVD player with a Mac mini, when a new one comes out. I'm not sure of the name of the ports of the speakers to the DVD player, but if they're not standard I guess I could wire them in. Ideally what I'd like to do is to send digital audio out the optical audio jack of the Mac mini, into an amplifier, and then to the speakers. The amplifier therefore should sport at least two inputs for digital audio, one for the Mac, one for the TV, and analogue inputs for various other devices. In the case of only one optical input, another device to act as a junction for two optical audio's into one would also do.

1 - Is this possible?
2 - Does the amplifier I seek exist?
3 - What are the limitations with surround sound and the Mac? I've been reading that it's not fully supported in QuickTime, but I'm not sure. As long as it'll output true surround sound using DVDs it should be okay.
4 - Is the digital audio sent as it is, i.e. without conversion, through the wire? If that was the case, does that mean the amplifier would required audio codecs to process them?

Thanks for any help!
