Advise on 2014 15" for $700

Hi everyone, looking for some advise.

I found a used mid 2014 15" MBP on our online newspaper classified section. Here is some info from the ad:

"15" Retina Display
2.5 GHz quad-core i5 processor with Iris Pro Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB Graphics card
500 GB SSD
16 GB RAM 1600 MHz DDR3
This is the highest model Apple made when I purchased it last year and cost me over $2500 at time of purchase. I am currently in need of some extra cash and need to part ways with this beautiful machine. This model is selling for $1200 used. I am discounting it heavily because the LCD is cracked on the bottom. 70% of the screen is useable and no other components are damaged. Computer works perfectly if attached to a separate monitor. Includes charger."

His asking price is $700.
How much does Apple charge for a new display - best situation/worse situation?

Is there anything else I should be concerned with or worried about?

Dont quote me...probably around $500 or so. They just completely replace the top case.

You can get the display assembly on eBay for ~$250.

Follow the instructions on iFixit to replace the display.

Why would the top case be replaced?

The keyboard and touchpad works fine and I am assuming the top case is not bent or anything.

Whatever they call the case/display - thought it was the top case. Anyways - that is what I mean.
