Yesterday I updated to 15.3 on my mac no problem. Today I updated 15.3.1 and the iphone keeps disconnecting via lightning cable while updating. Anybody experiencing this?

It’s a OEM….
I have this problem also. My Mac is a 2014 MBP and both USB ports are dodgy. Once I plug the cable in and connect the phone the iPhone will alternately/not show in Finder. About every second. If I put my iPad resting on the actual cable at the USB plug end, just past the strain relief, all is good and I can update with IPSW.
One of these days I will buy a new MacBook.........

It's got to be the IOS, worked perfectly fine prior to the other day, until I tried to make a physical backup on the mac.

Could well be. Although my Mac did have me install an "update" (not OS) prior to being able to sync and update the iPhone. Now, I am stuck on Big Sur, so that could be the reason for the "update" on my Mac.
What year Mac and OS are you running?

It could very well be, I have macOS Monterey 12.2.1 and a 2019 27" iMac with 64gb memory. The timing is about right.

It never hurts to try a new cable. Everything that has ever broken worked the day beforehand. Also restart the iPhone and Mac.

Here's a screen shot of the message. I tried changing cables, not working. Started with 12.2.1

You can also try cleaninging the charging port of your iphone that the lighting cable plug into .

Here a video of cleaning the port on the iPhone

You should also check the cable and the port on your Mac too or try a different port
