Hello programmers,
I was wondering if any of you knew how to port a Mac Os 9 program into Mac OS X. The file that i am after is the 'Mad Dog' screensaver in the After Dark collection. It is well sought after but no one that i know has been able to port it. If it is at all possible, please could one of you be kind enough to do so.
Thank,
Richard

Ahh, Good old After Dark, well I hope someone knows because I love that application. Then again mine never even worked on OS 9, and early versions did not even work with OS 8 :( Well, lets try to get it everyone :D ;)

If you can supply the full, commented source code and the original version of all resources (images, sounds etc) used I'm sure one of us can probably port it. As you say it's an After Dark module it probably calls a lot of After Dark functions so we'll need the full, commented source code to that too.

Unless you are the owner/programmer of the original I doubt you have this.

We can't port anything for a binary. It might be possible to extract the resources and replicate the functionality be observing it running but extracting then re-using the resources would be copyright theft.

Hmm, this sounds like it might be harder then I thought, Google time :p

I have the original discs that have all of the screensavers on if that helps.

It doesn't.. as RD said, most likely for what you want to do, you need the source code. Having the binaries doesn't help.

If AfterDark is defunct (are they?), then there isn't really any practical reason to not copy their resources...as long as you're not selling it for money I don't see them suing you over it.

OP, can you post screenshots of the original screensaver, or maybe even a movie of it working? If its cool I'd be willing to do a remake.

There is an After Dark for OS X available here. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to include the Bad Dog module.

That would depend on how successful it is.

At any rate, the fact that the company is defunct does not change the fact that the resources are likely to be held under a copyright. Thus any copying of these resources would be a violation of the copyright protection laws. Sure, in practice you might get away with it. But there is nothing to say that the copyright owners will not come knocking one day with their lawyers.

They are probably owned by a successor company. Quite a few people have tried to make clones of long dead games only to have a C&D head their way from the copyright owners.
