after effects causing tons of page outs

i've been using after effects on my unibody mbp since i bought it a year ago without issue. after installing snow leopard after effects, when rendering, consumes all 4gb of my ram, even on simple renders, promptly generates several gb of page outs, and my whole system locks up until the render finishes (which takes forever, on average it manages to use 50% of 1 of my 2 cpu cores).

what the heck??
