I just turned off open Gl acceleration in AE, and For my Live preview I am getting a frame rate that is 20% higher compared to when its turned on, rendering a 720p clip with the comic effect (which should be GPU accelerated?!)

does anyone know how this happens?

Software acceleration is faster with consumer grade GPUs, especially with an IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor) like you have.
To take advantage of OpenGL in DCC (Digital Content Creation) applications like AE, you need a Nvidia Quadro or ATI FirePro GPU, as they are purely meant for DCC and support OpenGL, though they suck at games.

The 3D labs card I once had was purely fantastic (2004) and was very fast in Combustion and many layers of high res photographs and such stuff, but I couldn't even play Age of Empires or any other low level graphics game. Solitaire worked though.
