After installing Mavericks all my files are gone!

I just installed Mavericks and when it was finished my MacBook Pro did a restart and then the window appeared saying "Set up your new Mac"... so basically now I have a "new" MacBook with nothing left from my old files, programs, preferences etc. Unfortunately i didn't do a backup right before I installed Mavericks (last Backup was 3 weeks ago). The weirdest thing though is that on my Hard drive there are still 155GB taken! But how can I access that?? Anyone an idea how to get my files back???

Please help, 3 weeks of work are gone just because of Mavericks!!!!

Why is it that people can't do a simple backup, especially before a major release upgrade?????
