I updated to iOS 15 yesterday and immediately started tagging all my notes. For me, this was the most anticipated feature of iOS 15.

Unfortunately, I quickly learned that shared notes containing tags do not play nicely with older devices.

A shared note with tags on a device running iOS 14.8 appears to be fine.

However, a shared note with tags on a device running iOS 13 or earlier does not work at all. In fact, if you have a shared note with someone with iOS 13 or earlier and add a tag to that note, the entire note simply disappears from their device.

What a disaster. A little heads up from Apple would have been nice. Now I have to remove the tags from my shared notes and share them all over again.

Has anybody else experienced this? I imagine removing the tags is the only solution, but if there is another workaround I’m all ears.

Thanks.

I just noticed this, too. Really not cool. I have a bunch of other devices, on various older OS, and Notes is nuked on all of them. On my El Capitan workstation Notes just crashes. That's not okay. If the new features don't apply, then fine. But destroying the whole app is not cool.

Apple does this all the time with the exception of the reminders where there was a button to upgrade to the new one. It's annoying. Lost safari icloud tabs when high sierra/ios11 dropped too. Safari bookmarks also stopped syncing with pre ios11

Same. I have 2 wonderful older Macs that *cannot* be OS upgraded. And so much basic functionality has been stripped due to updates in other OS. I've seen all the ones you listed, as well as iTunes… which is a huge problem, because my older MacPro is my homes music server.

Related to the same issue: Will tags or Quick Notes appear on Big Sur ? Love the new feature on IOS15 but none seems to translate to Big Sur. I realise not all the new features would carry across but wondering if there is anyway to at least see the Quick Notes on Big Sur. Anyone discovered anything ?

I ran into a similar problem where if you share a note FOLDER, it disappears from the web version of iCloud Notes. Apple isn't keeping their own freaking web application updated to handle their latest services! Pretty disappointing and a bit embarrassing, to be honest.

WOW, same deal with tags, on non-shared notes. I added a tag to a note and it vanished from the web version of Notes. This is absolutely unacceptable! I can't even get the note back by deleting the tag. I had to copy the text in the note, create a new note, and paste it.

I'm filing a Feedback about this even though it'll probably be read by **** all.

When I went to tag a note in iOS 15 it warned me it wouldn't be compatible with my old MacBook. So no complaints there. But it doesn't make sense to me though regardless. Why can't it still be visible on old devices and just ignore #hash things and treat them like normal text? Until iOS 15 I could happily put any kind of "#{tag}" in a note, and could just search for it using the standard search function. Why this new, seemingly unecessary level of compatibility issue?

The ironic thing is that you can add #tags to a note in the older Notes version (for me, in the web app) and they'll appear as normal text in iOS 15, but if you add #tags in iOS 15, the notes vanish on the web app.

It's so bizarre.
