Like the subject says. Software Update offers me new updates - when I click on the install button, nothing happens. Try to install some kind of software (Itunes9 in this case), open the DMG, read all the agreements, click on the Install button - nothing.

I can't even upgrade to 10.6.1 to find out if this is fixed !!!

What to do now ?

before anyone suggests this - I just ran disk utility to repair permissions, and it didn't help.

Try this:

1. Shut Down your machine.
2. Press the power button and hold the shift key right afterwards
3. Mac OS will boot into safe mode,
4. Run Software Update when you are up and running in safe mode
5. Update your software
6. Your machine will restart normally when the updates complete.
7. Your problems should be cured.

It can be the font issue, a bad font can be crashing sercurityagent.

This is the window that pops up to asks for the password.

---

Likely in safe boot, when no other fonts are installed, things will be fine.

If after the safe boot, on a normal boot a window pops up asking you if you want to trash a font or take care of it later -- press the delete font button.

thanks for the tips, but safe mode doesn't help. within safe mode, it also doesn't work. the software upgrade "continue" button turns grey for a second, as if it will continue, but then it turns back active, and I can press it again.

AFAIK a clean install with Snow Leopard is not even an option? So a clean install with Leopard and then upgrade again? :(

it gets worse, I thought maybe I can create a new admin user while in safe mode, just to see if it helps to have a clean account - the "click the lock to make changes" lock also doesn't work. says "authenticating" and then goes back to the locked state.
