I am looking for a game similar to age of empires for mac. I want to be able to download it online for my 2011 13" macbook air base model. I will almost always play single player mode.
I liked age of empires in that it wasn't too high paced and there was no time limit. I just like to build up my army and resources/technologies and or my town with defenses. I can't find aoe for lion and am unsure about the civ IV game. I don't want a game only focused on war so I was not sure about roads of rome 2 or rome total war gold edition.
I considered:
Rome total war gold edition
Roads to rome
Civ IV

I thought about these only because they are available on the app store. I am fine with steam or another source.
Any ideas? It doesn't have to be based on society 2000 years ago.

I like the same type of game. Not sure if it runs on Mac but Starcraft or Starcraft 2 are good. They are more science fiction but based off the same principles - resource gathering, technology improvements, etc.

Age of Empires III should run on Lion. Also, there's Starcraft II as mentioned before. Starcraft I and AoE I & II won't work on Lion.

Aoe III sounds perfect but I cannot seem to find it. I did notice they have it for free for online play but its only for pc. I don't have windows so I need a mac version.
After further review it seems that age of empires fits into real time strategy category. So I will consider any RTS titles as long as they run in lion.
Not really sure I like the turn based strategy games. I have never played one but without a demo I hate to spend 50 bucks just to se if I even like the turn based games.
Command and conquer looks interesting. It is more future based and I am not in love with that but I could get over it if it ran in lion. seems like its only pc though.

You didn't say whether you have the 64gb 11" or 128gb 13" but going boot camp may be the simplest solution. That was the way I went with my base 13" and now I have access to Windows games. Boot camp took up about 17gb on my install, which is no problem for me but might be for you if you only have 64gb to begin.

It appears that AOE 3 will work with Lion. http://3athouth.com/download-age-of-empires-iii-version-1-0-6-for-mac-os-x

According tο Destineer, thе following changes hаνе bееn mаdе tο Age οf Empires III fοr Mac OS X аnd Windows:

· Re-wrote thе MP3 playback system іn order tο bе compatible wіth Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

You can buy it on Amazon and probably elsewhere.

AoE 2 should work too (though not on Lion sadly). I did try it (on SL) and it installed succesfully and I could boot it up, but in the menu I couldn't click on anything so I gave up after not finding anything about the issue.

Edited op to include 13" base model.
I am cool with going boot camp but not sure the best route to go about buying windows. I would much prefer downloading windows but not sure what kind of deals I can get. It seems to be $199 for home premium retail version download which imo is pretty steep. Not sure which version to go with or where to get it from. I am in sweden so amazon and ebay are kinda not options.
