AHT (Apple Hardware Test) - MacBook Pro 10.4.11 - can I run it not from the DVD?

I have a busted DVD drive, and I need to run the AHT utility.

I heard it was in the /system/Library/CoreServices/ folder. It's not for me. And so, pressing "d" or "f2" on a reboot doesn't work.

Anything I can do to run AHT without getting my DVD drive repaired first?

external DVD drive if possible or cloning the disk to a flash drive and pressing option at boot and selecting that USB flash drive might do the trick.
