AHT hardware test download - yosemite

are you familiar with:

have 2009 17" MBP that has issues and i want to run HW test. i downloaded the package, enabled show hidden files in finder and put the folder ".diagnostics" under "/System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics" as instructed.
laptops runs OS X 10.10.4 - pressing "D" on start or "option+D" does to not work to load the HW test.

what am i doing wrong?

I'm not sure if you have a Early 2009 17" MBP (shipped with OS 10.5) or a Late 2009 17" MBP (shipped with OS 10.5 or 10.6). In either case the shipped OS is earlier than 10.7.

From an Apple Support page (towards the bottom):
Using Apple Hardware Test on computers with OS X v10.7 and earlier
AHT is located on the Applications Install Disc 2 and should be included with your computer or the MacBook Air Software Reinstall Drive on a MacBook Air (Late 2010). To start AHT on these computers make sure the Applications Install Disc 2 is inserted into the built-in optical drive, external Apple Superdrive, or for the MacBook Air (Late 2010) be sure the MacBook Air Software Reinstall Drive is inserted into a USB port. Then, follow steps 1-6 outlined in the previous section of this article.
