Here are some screens of the AIM DEMO, I must say pretty good

it took about 20 minutes to get push notification (I noticed it worked when I finally rebooted my Iphone OS after installing the AIM Beta App)

System Preferences - notice the push notification TAB, this is where you go to enable certain apps.

This also give the option of how you want your notification to happen (IE: sounds, alerts, badges)

I kept all my turned on, just to test them out.

Now just launch the AIM app, use the aim app, and goto the Settings for AIM and your account

Now, if you close the app, and keep your phone in standby, or you are in another app, if you get a message, you will receive a notification

One of the things I also noticed, if that if you have Free memory, you can see some new services running in the background, for push notification, and that certain application (AIM) pretty interesting, but to be honest, it does not slow down the Iphone 3g (NOT THE Iphone 3G ) at all...
