iChat if you only need to talk with AIM and MobileMe users.

Adium if you need to talk with everyone.

The AIM client isn't even a consideration for me.

The AIM client hasn't been updated in years simply because there is no need with iChat. With Leopard, iChat now supports AIM and Google Talk which is all I need so I like it.

one aspect i like about aim is how you can have multiple chats grouped. where as ichat has a separate window for each conversation.

I prefer iChat over AIM any day. However, Adium is much more fully-featured. Shame it doesn't support audio and video chatting. Due to that limitation, I must use both iChat and Adium.

You can have iChat chats grouped:
Preferences -> Messages -> check "collect chats in a single window".

I didn't know that iChat supported Google Talk. Thanks for the info! :D
