I have Air 2 I think from 2015. It used to run great but for some reason now -some- websites are very heavy they almost run in slow motion. They are like Desktop websites trying to load on a Blackberry device.

Like Macrumors is smooth but biggest issue I have with this is Youtube site. If you own a newer iPad I want to know if this is an iOS issue or my hardware is too low. Waiting for the next Air upgrades.

I don’ think this is an iOS thing. I’m currently watching a video on YouTube in PIP mode in Safari with a Macrumors tab open underneath. I’m in split view with tapatalk running on the side which I’m using to reply. Butter smooth scrolling on either app without dropped frames on the video window. This is on an iPP 12.9 gen 2.

Hardware.

Mind, I just tried YouTube on a 128GB Air 2 (in Safari, no other tabs open, 3 other apps in background). It does take longer to load compared to newer iPads but it's nowhere near as bad as desktop sites on a Blackberry.

Honestly, the Air 2 still performs faster than a lot of 5-10 year old Windows PCs I've had the misfortune of working with (I'm usually the go-to tech person for family and co-workers' computer woes). Note, this Air 2 only has a few apps installed and has 95GB free out of 128GB. It's mostly used for Twitch and YouTube and has never been subjected to heavy multitasking.

It might be worth doing a full erase and setup as new on your Air 2 to improve performance while waiting for the new models to come out.

The tablet is almost 6 years old...it’s definitely going to be the old CPU. Upgrade to something with a minimum of an A10 processor.

Upgrade to the 7th generation iPad. It is way faster compared to the iPad Air 2.

The Air 2's SoC is moderately slow by today's standards. While it still works reasonably well, I started noticing slower website loading 2 years ago (in addition to the increased Safari refreshes due to its 2 GB memory).

My wife's iPad 7 with A10 and 3 GB RAM is a big increase in performance, and my iPad Pro 10.5 with A10X and 4 GB RAM is an even bigger increase in performance. This is not surprising, considering that the iPad 7 is 2X as fast single-core and 1.33X as fast multi-core compared to iPad Air 2, and the iPad Pro 10.5 is 2.2X as fast for both single-core and multi-core.

Did you try the youtube SITE or app? the app works fine the site is slow

I dont think fresh installs do much on iOS. I will restore from backup so we are back to square one.

Yes but nothing on webpages changed in 6 years, its still HTML, CSS, HD video and h264 codecs

I am guessing new Airs will be released in Sept or Oct. might be worth the wait.

I think it might be faster, in 6 years speed must have more than doubled for mobile chips especially the PRO, they are thinking of putting those chips in laptops now

Both actually. Iirc, the app was actually slightly slower while scrolling than browser (Safari) when I tried.

Don't restore from backup. Set it up as new. Not having crud accumulated over the years does help.

Don't forget JavaScript. I think that has become more and more complicated over the years. I abhor sites with infinite scroll.

That said, newer chipsets are much more powerful. If I were you, instead of waiting for the next Air, I'd set an alert for refurb 2018 iPad Pro 11 $549/64GB or $679/256GB.
