My air 2 is 2 days old and I've used an apple smart cover since day 1.

There's a smudge mark starting about 2oclock on the outside of the Touch ID ring, and goes about half way distance to the edge of the screen.

If you use a cloth the mark goes away, but if you swipe your finger across it the mark returns

Is there an issue with the seal in that area maybe? Next genius appointment is next Thursday when the iPad will be 6 days old so I'll be asking for a brand new replacement.

Currys who I bought the iPad from in the UK will not be interested in swapping the device

That would be likely that the oleophobic coating was smudged before curing.

You are seeing the oil from your fingers sticking to the defective coated area.

If it bothers you, you will have no problems getting an exchange.

Are you sure Apple will swap it? I only ask because when I bought an iPad from Argos some time ago, Apple said I had to swap it at Argos.

I'm unsure whether they'll tell me to go back the store where I know they refuse to take it back! I'm just on live chat to Apple now to see what they say

Did Argos swap it?

After an taking an hour to do a 3 mile journey (stupid road works), I returned my 64gb space grey wifi.

Currys refunded me no questions asked. They agreed with the defect which i really didn't expect.

They had no stock of any models so refunded me gift vouchers (no choice as that's what I used to buy the ipad). Going to hold out until they have a 128gb space grey. 64gb isn't enough as I don't use cloud services

Air 2 smudge mark next to touch id

Seen this on optical coatings on many iDevices. Exchange it.
