I know laptops need to come out of carryon bags when people go through Security at the airport, and that IPads do not. Does the Air need to be taken out of bags?

The 13" yes. The 11", technically no, but don't be surprised if security wants you to take it out.

There's just so much discrepancy, some airports allow it to stay in, some don't, just better off taking it out anyway.

Just don't forget to pull out your laptop (MBP15) when you pull out your iPad (in case it's required).

I was tired that day. Pulled out the iPad (because I didn't want to forget it) and then forgot my MBP15.

Won't do that again. :(

I have not had to take it out of the case in any airport for the 4 months that I have had my MBA! That is one of the many great things about it. Good luck and let us know how you fare. :D

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8G4 Safari/6533.18.5)

Like others it does vary by airport. I've never had to take it out of the sleeve but have had to remove it from it's backpack.
