Did you turn airdrop on 'contacts only' or 'everyone'? Are you both connected to the same wifi network?

You don't need to be on the same wifi network, so scratch that. But check that setting and make sure its set to everyone.

yes both iphone 5's set to ev eryone on same wifi network, neither one will find each other to airdrop too

I thought that AirDrop's killer feature was that it doesn't require you to be on a WiFi network. But I too have a hard time finding other iPhones. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
