Air in Clamshell Mode with Thunderbolt Display

Contemplating this setup and curious to know if anyone with similar setup can describe how the Air manages the desktop space when using the 27 thunderbolt display versus the Air's 13" or 11" screen?

Picturing this setup with the 27" TB display as my main work mode most of the time, and I can see arranging the desktop for that resolution. So what happens when you unplug the thunderbolt and use the air alone? Is the arrangement of the desktop the same, just at a smaller resolution? Or does it move icons around?

You can see the effect of how OS X manages the different resolutions by just changing the resolutions on your MBA in system preferences.

I have auto-arrange of my icons turned on so they're always in a nice grid. I use my 11" MBA in clamshell mode w/ a 27" thunderbolt display. When it's not plugged in, I have a few rows of icons. When it is plugged in, I have just one. It works great .
