Air Tags? Working or Not Working?

I don't know about this, but I have to be practically on top of my air tags for them to be detected. Yes, I changed out the batteries and no improvement. What is going on with the air tags that they are undependable and undetectable unless you are on top of them like I said?

when you select them in findmy app do you not see these buttons?
