AirDispay as only screen?

I need a portable solution for running Mac. I'm already getting an iPad and already have an extra keyboard for it. I am in college working on learning programming, and one of the goals is Java. So, I could just get a Macbook Air or something, but I would like to buy the less expensive MacMini and a Mouse and use my iPad as a tiny screen.
So, I have two questions:
Is it possible to use AirDisplay as my ONLY screen?
Would it work fluently enough if I'm using X-Code on it.

And as some background info, I have an iMac with Lion.

Yes you could, but you're going to need to plug it into an alternate source to set up the connection each time you want to use it, so it would probably work better to just get a monitor with the Mini.

So when all is siad and done...it would probably be cheaper to just get a macbook air. 599 plus monitor vs 999 period. unless i could find a good monitor and a mouse for less than 400 witch is unlikely. not to mention that i dont really want to get a monitor that isn't made by apple.

i was kind of thinking i would get an answer like this, but i was hoping... thanks for the info. it was very helpful.
