There's no restriction on file types/size, as long as your iOS device is able to open the file natively, or via an App. Same applies for transfers between iOS devices.

To where ever an app that used that specific file type puts its files. (Photos obviously gets put in your Photos app, PDF's I would assume into iBooks, and so on.)
