AirDrop not working with older Macs

I have a 2013 MacBook Air which uses the "new" AirDrop, and some friends who have older Macs who use the "old" AirDrop. I can AirDrop between my Mac and other iOS devices, but I can't AirDrop to their Macs. I press the button to search for older Macs and they just don't appear.
