Airdrop problems - can anyone help?

The Aim:
I want to share files between a 2010 iMac and a 2015 MBA.

The problem:
Neither device can 'see' or find each other in AirDrop. I appreciate that my 2010 iMac, may be an 'older Mac' and do click that search option, however they almost never find each other.

I say 'almost never', because 1 time in 10 it will work like it is supposed to.

Can anyone help?
