I have a 2012 and 2009 MBP. For the 2009, I noticed that there is an option for AirDrop in finder and there is a description "AirDrop with older macs: On". What is this suppose to mean? AirDrop is supported but can be transfer with other BT 3.0?

There's the AirDrop that was introduced with older Macs in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and this uses wi-fi for discovery and file transfers.

The "newer" AirDrop is the one in where you can transfer with/between iOS devices and newer Macs on Yosemite. Until the requirements are out, it's believed that this requires BT4LE for discovery and to establish an ad-hoc wifi connection for the transfer.
