When I try to AirDrop photos from my iOS 8 iPhone to my Yosemite Mac nothing appears in the airdrop window in the finder.

And when I share a photo via Airdrop that is on my Mac, that photo does show in the finder airdrop window but neither my iPhone or iPad sitting right next to the Mac are notified of the airdrop.

I have a late 2009 iMac and turned on the option to share with older macs.

Your wifi card likely isn't up to spec. I believe Apple requires macs to be at least from 2012.
