Hi guys,

Will AirPlay 2 allow me to connect to my home Lighting and thermostats when I'm away from home?

I'm in the market for a smart speaker and the Sonos One is top of the list. It'll get Airplay 2 in 2018.

No AirPlay is just for transmitting audio and video wirelessly. What you're probably looking for is HomeKit compatibility.

Thanks mate. Do you have any suggestions for a good smart speaker that's compatible with iOS? I'd love the Homepod, but it's a bit too pricey, a bit too unknown... and I doubt it'll have Android compatibility (wifey has an Android!)

you seem to be getting several terms that have nothing to with each other confused..

airplay is local audio/video streaming.
homekit is home automation control.

the sonos will have airplay 2,
airplay just lets you stream music from your iPhone, iTunes, or your mac.
airplay 2 is a updated version of the original protocol which is about 10 years old.

airplay 2 also shows the speakers as a homekit device, so you can control a speaker much the same way as you control lights, and it opens up control of speakers to Siri using the homekit commands.

sonos natively streams from several different online services without needing your phone or computer to relay the signal. so airplay is probably not a necessity.

to control your lights away from home, you need an appleTV (3, 4, or 4K) or an iPad (running iOS 10 or 11, in your house connected to your home wi-fi, and preferably plugged into a charger so it doesn't die while you're away)
without these, you can still control your lights while you're at home.

but with the wife having android, she won't have easy access to your automated lights, so your WAF is going to be pretty high

------------
WAF - an early home automation term, wife annoyance factor, a measure of how difficult it is to control by the less technically oriented members of your household.

Thanks waw74, things are slowly becoming more clear. I feel like those folk who have lost touch with technology!

I have an iPad which sit at home all the time. What do I need to do to make it a HUB?
