Are there any recommended apps that I can use to playback video to my Apple TV from an external drive besides iTunes and without saving the file on the Mac?

There are lots of Mac video players besides iTunes. VLC is popular. As you can simply share your Mac's screen over Airplay, any of them will work.

I went and bought a Mini DisplayPort to hdmi adapter because AirPlay mirroring is a cluster when trying to do movies and other videos.
