AirPlay keeps reverting from AirPod to iPhone or iPad speaker

I have some Airpods (early production set).

I am having some issues. When I am on a phone every few minutes it will switch the sound from the AirPod to the phone speaker. I have the same issue with the iPad. Sometimes it even happens more frequently like in less than a minute.

Any suggestions on what the cause might be?
