Not sure I'm in the right Forum but here goes.

I have a 2012 Mac mini hooked up to a television with several movies stored on the hard drive. The movies have been processed through Handbrake. My stereo is across the room and I want to stream the audio from the movies to my stereo using an Airport Express. But Airplay will only let me stream music from iTunes. Is there something I'm not doing correctly or am I limited by iTunes or by my first generation Express?

The current Airport Express page states:
https://www.apple.com/airportexpress/#airplay
Play iTunes music on your speakers. Wirelessly.
AirPlay takes the music from the iTunes library on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and sends it wirelessly to any stereo or speakers in your home. Simply connect your speakers to AirPort Express using an audio cable (sold separately). Then, using iTunes on your computer or the Music app on your iOS device, choose which speakers you want your music to play on. If you have more than one AirPort Express connected to speakers, you can play the same music from iTunes on your Mac or PC on all your speakers at the same time. Already have a Wi-Fi network in place? Use AirPort Express to add music streaming to its capabilities and create a whole-house musical experience.

So I can't stream the audio portion using Airplay. Will an add-on like Airfoil allow me to? I also think Audioengine has a solution but I would prefer to use the hardware I have on hand.

Thanks for the quick reply.

if you are running mountain lion, you can set your audio output to airplay speakers. (system preferences -> sound -> output)

or you can get airfoil, and select your video player.

But...(and it's it's a big but)

either way you do it, the audio will be delayed by a couple seconds.
all airplay audio is delayed due to the way airplay buffers, iTunes and others make up for this by delaying the local interface to match the remote sound.

there is a video player that comes bundled with airfoil that will take care of this problem, but i've had problems with it being able to play files at times.
airfoil does come with a free trial if you want to try it out, that will transmit for 10 minutes at a time, not sure if the video player works with that though.

That explains why Airplay is only for music. Sounds like I need to come up with a way to hard wire it or settle for what I have now.
I'll likely give Airfoil a try before I give up.

Thanks.

Use VLC for playing your videos. Press f while the video is playing till the delay is -1900 ms.
Oh, and select your airport express for audio out of course.
