When we AirPlay an online stream on iPad to Apple TV, does the iPad remain in the chain (online stream to iPad and then iPad to Apple TV) or does the Apple TV get and play that stream (online stream to Apple TV)?
 
When you AirPlay a stream from a content provider such as Netflix for example the data is being pulled by the AppleTV (you can watch this through wifi analysis software) however the iDevice remains a integral part of the system. With iOS 9 I would describe the iDevice is an overly sensitive remote control.
