Airplay with macbook pro (early 2011)

Hi everyone,
I have a macbook pro from 2011 with the following characteristics:
Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63b)

I've been trying to get airplay to work with my apple TV but I can't seem to get the little rectangle thing on my desktop to appear. I suspect it's because it's only on mountain lion and not on lion (i.e. encouraging me to upgrade....). Can someone confirm this? Is there a free app to allow airplay to work?
