Currently, I have my AirPods paired with my iPad and iPhone.

However, any time I turn them on, they typically automatically connect to my iPhone. I then have to force the iPad to connect to them.

Is there an option to set a default connection for my AirPods?

Thanks all

From my experience they connect to whatever screen is open after you open the case lid.

They connect or try to connect to the last device they were paired to. If you want to use them on a different device you’ll need to go in Bluetooth on that device and hit connect...

Yep, last device.

I usually switch to them via Control Centre > long press Media Player > Audio Select > Airpods.

This would actually be amazing, but is not the case for me. How do you configure them to do this?

My second-biggest complaint about the AirPods is that you have to manually pair them if you're using a different device than the last one they were paired with, and that this can sometimes take too long.

(First-biggest is that they don't stay well in my ears if I move my head a lot, but that's not really fixable)

Maybe i got it wrong, if your iPad is open and you open the AirPods case they show up on iPad screen? i decided to get the Bose QC3511 and selling the AirPods.

Mine will connect to the last device.

I use both the Bose QC35 and Airpods. Each fits a different purpose. However I do like that the Bose is connected to two devices at the same time. Maybe in a future generation.

I could only use the right AirPod, left would just fall out. Yeah the Bose are good like that.

Yes they show up, but if you insert them in your ears, they’ll pair to the last device used.

The pop-up doesn’t mean they’ve paired. It’s just that the device recognises them & will pair them quickly once you manually select them from the audio select menu.
