Apple's standard AirPods now offer active noise cancellation for an additional $50, bringing them closer in terms of features to the AirPods Pro than ever before, so which should you choose?

Almost three years after the launch of the first-generation AirPods Pro, Apple unveiled the second-generation model alongside the iPhone 14 lineup. Although the second-generation AirPods Pro feature the same design as their predecessor, they improve on features like Active Noise Cancellation, in-ear detection, and battery life, while introducing new functionality like Adaptive Transparency, volume adjustment touch controls, and precision finding.

Apple recently introduced a major update for its standard AirPods, with the earbuds gaining a more refined design for improved comfort, H2 chip, dust, sweat, and water resistance, 5GHz connectivity, a vent system for pressure equalization, Personalized Volume, Voice Isolation, a USB-C port, and "Siri" command support – just like the AirPods Pro 2. For an additional $50, the similarities with the AirPods Pro go even further with active noise cancellation, Transparency mode, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, support for Apple Watch chargers, and a speaker in the case for Find My.

Should you consider purchasing one of the fourth-generation AirPods models, or do you need the higher-end AirPods Pro, which sell for $249? Our guide helps to answer the question of how to decide which of these sets of AirPods is best for you.

The standard AirPods are now very similar to the AirPods Pro, offering almost all of the same key features at a lower price point. As a result, the fourth-generation AirPods should be the default choice for most prospective buyers. If you also have AirPods Max, which already offer ANC, and are looking for an additional pair of headphones to use while working out or on the go, the fourth-generation AirPods are also a good choice.

You should only buy the AirPods Pro if you are happy with its in-ear fit, which provides better sound quality and active noise cancellation, but can be somewhat uncomfortable for prolonger periods of time. While the fourth-generation AirPods do now offer ANC, it is not as effective as that of the AirPods Pro due to the lack of an in-ear fit, so if noice cancellation is your main priority, the AirPods Pro 2 are still the best choice.

In addition to better sound quality and ANC, the AirPods Pro 2 also offer slightly longer battery life, Conversation Boost, touch controls for volume, MagSafe charger compatibility, Precision Finding with the U1 chip, and a lanyard loop, as well as hearing protection, testing, and aid features via an upcoming software update. Many users will be able to justify the additional $70 to get the AirPods Pro as a result. Nevertheless, the fourth-generation AirPods are still a solid option for most average customers and will be better for those who do not like the AirPods Pro's in-ear silicone tips.

AirPods Pro frequently see hefty discounts on Amazon and other third-party retailers, so stepping up to the Pro version may be more worth it if you can take advantage of one of those deals. The standard AirPods also often see solid discounts, so it is always worth seeking the best price using our Deals roundup.

i'm very happy with the AirPods 4 with ANC. the fit feels great coming from the AirPods 2. didn't like the silicone tips, they make my ear sore after a little while.

Upgraded from gen. 1 to gen. 4 with ANC and is really satisfied. I chose the ANC version not for the ANC but all the other extras the ANC version have that the non ANC do not. Never liked closed headsets so the pro was never an option for me.

If you liked the fit of AirPods 2, you will be pleasantly surprised with AirPods 4, almost as good of a fit (vs. AirPods 3 that immediately fell out of my ears). I constantly forget they are in my ears and sounds is good enough compared to AirPods Pro that the better fit and comfort are worth the slightly worse audio and a few other lost features.

That's a lot of differences for products that are supposedly "very similar" and "offering almost the same key features".
The AirPods Pro 2 are clearly superior to the AirPods 4, and by the way, those who don't like the eartips can just take them off – not sure why this is causing such a big deal.

This lineup is quite clear. It’s a miracle they haven’t turned it in a complete mess like the Apple Pencil and iPad lineups.

Has Apple specified a Noise Reduction Ratio (NRR) for the "Loud Sound Reduction" yet? A Single Number Rating (SNR) would be fine too. (The later is not the same as the signal to noise ratio also used in audio which is a bit confusing.

I liked the AirPods 4 but will be returning them because:

-Sound leak is bad! My wife heard my podcast easily at medium volume when we were going to sleep. I usually listen to Podcasts or music to fall asleep and she's never heard my audio leaking from my AirPods Pro 2
-No volume controls via touch on the stems is a massive L to me

Pros:

-OG AirPods and the old AirPods of this style didn't fit my ears well, they'd fall out just chewing or literally sitting still but I used them a lot and they stayed snug
-Sound quality was good
-Comfort was nice.

Interesting. Most ear buds with rubber tips won't feel good at all if you remove the rubber tip. That you can wear the pros comfortably without the tips does make them unique.

Probably a better solution (and maybe what OP intended?) was replacing the Apple silicone tips with third-party ones like the Comply memory foam version. I've used them on a few sets of AirPod Pros now and they work better for me.

In any case, I agree that that section of the article is oddly written and contradicts itself here and there.

I see so many questions on the internet about why would you choose the 4 with ANC when the Pro 2s are about the same price. And the answer is simple: this is not a decision that can only be made financially. On some levels these are very different products.

I have both, and there are times (mowing/trimming the lawn, flying, etc.) that the Pro 2s are better. The 4s are great for an open office environment, where I want to be able to cut out some noise but not all of it.

It's about features, sure—and here the Pro 2s win for some people, especially for the new hearing enhancements. But it's also about fit. Some people don't like the silicon tips. Some people find the traditional AirPods uncomfortable.

Long story short: The inclusion of ANC has made people think these are competing products, but they're for different people and different use cases.

When comparing AirPods 4 to AirPods pro 2 there are really only two things that matters -- how do you feel about rubber tips in your ear and which fit YOUR ears better.
I've never had the rubber tips issue. I lucked out! I can't imagine wanting them, but having to deal with that constantly.

"Up to 2x more effective active noise cancellation"

Any indication of dB reduction? Something more than "mo betta quieter"?

I was on a train today and tried out my Airpods 4 compared to my Airpods Pro 1. They are almost as good. Just a tiny bit more external sound leaking in on the 4s, but I would consider them equivalent for cutting out the low droning motor noise. Very impressed.

Regular AirPods won't stay in my ears if I'm doing anything other than sitting still, I need the silicone ear tips to hold them in place. I've been using the original AirPods Pro for 3 years, couldn't pass up the killer Amazon deal on the APP2, they're supposed to arrive today.

If that's the case, I can see why so many people are confused by what to get.
