Apple maintained its position as the global leader in the wireless headphone market in the first quarter of 2025, achieving 18.2 million shipments and capturing a 23.3% market share, according to new data from Canalys.

The data suggests that Apple, including its Beats subsidiary, continues to leverage its hardware-software ecosystem to dominate the true wireless stereo (TWS) market. Although its market share declined slightly from 24.4% in the first quarter of 2024, Apple still obtained a 12% year-over-year growth in shipments, contributing significantly to the global market's overall rebound. Total global TWS shipments rose to 78.3 million units—marking an 18% annual increase, which is the fastest growth rate for the category since 2021.

Leading brands are reportedly expanding aggressively in both geographic reach and product positioning to capture new customers. Apple's continued growth is attributed to its strategic focus on adding health-related integrations and ecosystem. Features such as seamless device switching, spatial audio with dynamic head tracking, and hands-free Siri continue to differentiate Apple's products in a crowded and increasingly price-sensitive market. The latest Powerbeats Pro 2 include heart rate monitoring, while the AirPods Pro 2 now feature a series of hearing health functionalities, including the ability to work as medical-grade hearing aids.

While Apple continues to lead in established markets, including North America where it holds over 50% market share, growth in emerging regions is being driven by aggressive pricing and localization strategies from rival vendors. For example, Xiaomi achieved a 63% year-over-year increase in shipments, reaching nine million units and surpassing Samsung to become the second-largest TWS vendor globally. Samsung, which includes Harman subsidiaries such as JBL, shipped 5.6 million units and held a 7.1% share. Huawei and Indian brand boAt rounded out the top five, with a 6.0% and 4.9% market share respectively.

The broader market shift away from basic audio functionality toward lifestyle and ecosystem value places Apple in a favorable position, provided it continues to expand the utility and desirability of its headphone offerings. Canalys attributed the U.S. market's renewed growth partly to inventory buildup ahead of anticipated tariff changes, which prompted retail partners to stockpile high-demand products, including Apple's.

Canalys also highlighted the growing momentum of open-ear wireless devices (OWS), a category that includes ear-hook and ear-clip designs aimed at merging audio technology with fashion and a more ambient listening experience. OWS products currently trail traditional TWS devices in terms of audio fidelity, but Canalys said that some vendors are working with audio labs to narrow the gap. While Apple has not entered the OWS segment, the trend toward lifestyle-oriented form factors could influence the company's future products.

The thing none of these articles acknowledge is that this is not like the competitive phone market. There is NO (wireless) EQUIVALENT to Apple headphones available. I am not an Apple ecosystem person, I own all the Bose and Sony equivalents and they are trash. They have no place in an educational context, when studying audio they clip the first vowel or consonant from everything you hear on all platforms - causing me to mistakenly mark cards I study wrong or even to memorize a foreign word missing its initial sounds. I don't understand how Bose and Sony aren't being sued for this

People are yet to realize that headphones are not the healthiest way to enjoy music. Speakers are much better and do not restrain you by blocking your ear canThis is dangerous for your hearing

It's exactly the opposite for most headphone use! (Study or audiobook listening)

As a non-native in the early years of your studies, you still haven't fully developed the robust neural connections needed to overcome background noise and even sound deletion or slurring. If you don't have noise cancelling and in ear headphones - especially in the developing world - you'll likely need to turn the audio you are engaging with to such a high volume level you'll be actively damaging your hearing - just to hear it clearly over traffic and construction noise.

Consider what happens when you make phone calls on a traditional telephone in a language that you don't speak natively! You notice how it is so hard to understand? That's because the phone companies, in all their cheapness, compress the hell out of the frequency range and most of the original speech doesn't make it through, they're counting on a native speaking brain to do the heavy lifting! Hate it!!!

Still refuse to buy another pair. These things just do not last longer than ~18 months. AirPods Pro develop ANC issues, regular AirPods end up with unreasonably short battery.

It's great for the business, terrible for the consumer and the environment.
My AirPods Pro 2 are now almost 2 years and a half old and working as expected (battery drains a bit faster) - bought them on launch 2022!

My AirPods Pro first generation still working as well !

So this is your experience but not always like that - great product and lasting very well!

While AirPods are not the best audio quality, they have Apple build qualities, features and support that is pretty much unrivaled.

Sony makes a lot of good products at the same or below price category and other manufacturers make superior sounding audio devices.

Well, Apple is not better at anything anymore, I will give them this. AirPods are the best at what they do at that price range.
iPhone 17 Ultra will change your mind 😏
The best smartphone is the one that is above average at every metric. Galaxy S25 Ultra might have somethings higher than the rest. But it’s still not good at most of the other things due to the software not being made by the same phone company.

That’s why Apple is able to make the best overall smartphone due to the software also being theirs unlike Samsung is not the one in charge of Android.

I'm still using my first gen airpods pro. They work fine.

You realize people use headphones for more than music, right?
Also speakers have the immediate downside that everyone around you is both forced to listen to your whatever, and good luck answering a private call on a speaker. I guarantee you no one wants to hear that.

Speakers are great for when you’re home. No one wants to hear your music when you’re out and about. There’s nothing worse than sitting in a public place where someone’s blaring music from a Bluetooth speaker. Now even some cruise lines have banned them.
