iPhone AirPods changing ringer and alerts volume to max

So this is driving me nuts. I usually keep my ringer and alerts volume at about halfway but it will randomly change to max volume without me changing it. I think I’ve narrowed it down to my AirPods being the culprit but how do I stop it? I usually figure it out when my alarm goes off full volume in the morning which my wife does not appreciate. Anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it? This was never an issue until iOS 13 and has been an issue with every release up to and including 13.2.2

I’m having the same issue, albeit when disconnecting from car Bluetooth.

It damn near gave me a heart attack a few mornings ago

I have looked but not been able to find a fix.
