Airpods Max seems overdue for a v2.0. USB-C, support for lossless audio and some form of wireless charging (magsafe or Qi) are 3 obvious fairly simple changes Apple could make, in addition to further refining ANC (make it better for voices) and sound quality.

Any rumors about when this might happen? These cans weren’t on my radar until recently but given how old they are now I feel kind of dumb buying them given they are so old…

There is no rumor pointing towards a new model AFAIK. Gurman said that Apple considered to release new colors, but that’s all. Apple tends to update quite slowly their headphone lineup, but they are rumored to transition the entire AirPods lineup to USB-C somewhere in 2023, so they may announce a new gen of APM at this moment. They also could just bump the port to USB-C while keeping the rest exactly the same, and wait until 2024 to announce a more meaningful upgrade.

It’s a low volume product, so it’s probably easier for Apple to hide details on production and development. Maybe it will come way sooner than that, but I doubt it, APM is not even two years old, whereas AirPods Pro 1st gen was produced for almost three years

If it was going to be released this year, I think Apple would have announced it already to capture holiday sales. So, at the earliest, it might be before the holidays next year, but, you never know.
