I removed the ear cups from the AirPods Max and tried to wear them (just to see what would happen) and they made a VERY loud high pitch squeal that still has my ears ringing. Just a warning! I think I've been permanently deafened.
I don't know why other people are making light of this. Thank you Mattxda for this PSA. I know I protect my hearing religiously and when something like this happens, it really upsets me.

If it was a short burst, then you'll likely be fine with no permanent damage. Not fun at all I'm sure, and I'm sorry it happened to you.

I don't think its acceptable for such a thing to happen. Having bought the Airpod Pros recently, the stupid loud chime when you switch mode pisses me off. No way to turn it off or turn it down. It is louder than I'm comfortable listening to music at. Hearing loss sucks, my dad is mostly deaf now from a lifetime of working at places that gave no concern to the workers.

Okay, I'm done venting now lol

We never take light of somebody doing something dumb.
It is important to acknowledge that person and the dumb thing he has done.

Regardless, I think it was cool of the OP to post this to prevent this from happening to anyone else. I've done plenty of dumb things in my life so I can't judge him on that :)

That sounds like a bug. The ear cups are only held on with magnets, designed so that they come off easily so they can be replaced/swapped around. I guess a few people might forget they'd pulled them off and put the headphones on. Some will put the headphones on just to try while waiting for replacement ear cups, or for washed ones to dry etc.

I assume without the cups the noise cancelling and proximity sensors mess up and cause feedback issues. If this was properly tested, the headphone software would know the cups are off and disable themselves. I assume no-one thought of that. I certainly hadn't :)

this happens to me as well. i'm on the phone with Apple now and they indicated there is a specialized department working on APM bugs. another bug is transparency mode will work in one ear but not the other. i have to desync/resync for it to resolve

Please tell me the reasons for wanting to use Airpods Max without the earcups?
And I wonder, if there're similar threads on a, let's say, bicycle forum:
"I removed the saddle from my bike and tried to ride it (just to see what would happen) and it made my butt very hurt on the inside. Just a warning! I think I've been permanently butthurted."
😑

I had a similar thing. I was not messing around with the earpads, I was just using the headphones normally.

I can’t remember what I was doing (maybe messing with transparency mode or trying to use pairing mode?), but there was a loud, static-y noise. Not quite deafening but certainly very unpleasant.

There is no way to “fix” stupid.

I cannot believe the way the world is going and the levels of odd behaviour by people. I don’t understand why you’d use the headphones without the ear cups, I could use them for the rest of my life and it would never ever have crossed my mind to even think about trying that.

Maybe there should be an IQ test before people buy anything these days

Jason, you are a very rude man. Go to your room and think about what you have done.

OMG this thread is GOLD.... Thank you to the OP for doing crazy stupid stuff to entertain us and thank you everyone for the funny replies... I needed a laugh! 😂 😂 😂 ❤️

I'm glad it made you guys happy, but my ears aren't so pleased. Next I'm going to try wearing AirPods Pro without the silicone tips to see what happens. After that, I'm thinking about possibly taping 2 iPhones to my ears and using them as portable headphones

It's funny but don't go deaf or hurt yourself trying to do crazy things. It's like that saying "it's all fun and games until someone loses an eye" 😂
