My Dad was in Best Buy and saw in the open box section Airpods Max Black Lighting for $250 and got them. The outside of the box is in bad condition, but the headphones, instructions and lighting to USB cord (never removed from the circle it comes in ) are like new and the case has a small scuff on it. He said they smell like a tad of perfume.

He paired them to his iPhone and says they sound great, they charge but he loves getting AppleCare on all his goods and these say they are not able to get them but have Warranty until May of 2025. So it seems they were a return that took a long time to get restocked? He called Apple and they said they cant sell the AppleCare on them since its original activation date was over 60 days ago, no exceptions. He has 2 weeks to return them to Best Buy.

He is now torn if he should keep them or return them. Any input? He seems ok with the lighting type instead of the USB-C type as he said he looked up he can use a 3.5mm cord to lighting with them and has a iPhone 13 Pro which he is keeping for awhile.

I told him to do his best check on them as I have heard of a lot of knock offs, but he seems to think they are 100% real Apple ones. He searched the serial number online and found no results, and said they paired great and checked and it says they are on the newest firmware that he saw updated.

Keep them unless he’s really bothered about someone else trying them on. A pair with AppleCare will cost about $225 more.

This being said I would take them to the Apple Store to verify they are genuine. There are some really good counterfeit versions out there.

Tell dad to enjoy his AirPods Max! If the AC is a big deal, BB still has some at 399 that are NIB. BestBuy is most likely selling you a returned item. He can always stop by and Apple Store with them if there is any concern they are fakes.

Thank you both! I told him what you suggested and he did make a Genius Bar appointment, they looked them over and verified that they are real!

He is really enjoying them and now more than ever, as they helped him set up the special audio where he had to use his Face ID so when he turns his head it follows with the sound. He told me now he will never use another pair without that.
