Had my Airpods Pro 2's for a week now and they are still using the 5A374 firmware and nothing I try will update them to 5B58. Tried all the tricks/instructions on Youtube...

I have them connected to an iPod Touch (7th gen) with iOS 15.7.2

Will they not update with an iPod Touch? Maybe you need a device with at least iOS 16?
When I close the lid, they automatically disconnect from the iPod.
Anyone else have this problem and know how to fix?

Give it some more time. My Airpods have always updated at random times.

Anyone know the exact steps to get it to update? There's a lot of misleading info out there.

Do I need it plugged into the charger?
Do I need to keep the lip open and connected to the iPod?

No one really seems to know... lol

You can't control when it will update

Best luck I've had is to have them plugged into the lightning cable overnight beside my iPhone also charging and AirPods still showing in the battery widget. I also got AirPods Max yesterday that came with a previous firmware version and they updated while plugged into the lightning cable with my iPhone beside them (iPhone not charging though). As others have said, it really is hit and miss.

I'm starting to think firmware updating only works with an iPhone...

Tried so far on iPod (7th gen) & iPad (Air 2) with no luck...
Anyone get this to work on anything other than an iPhone?

I think it has something to do with iOS 16. I have had my AirPod Pro 2's since September 23, 2022 and they are still on the original firmware, 5A374. My iPhone 12 is running iOS 15.7.

The Airpod Pro 2's have never updated to the new firmware.

There isn't a surefire way, but I plug them into a charger, leave the lid open and keep your phone close. I have had it update in as little as 5 minutes and it has taken as long as 12 hours. Some say to take the air pods out of the case while doing this and use them briefly before returning them. I have never had to do that.

For me, the easiest way to do it is to plug the APP case directly into a Mac or iPad using a USB to Lightning cable. Make sure the computer is connected to the internet, then open the APP case to permit it to connect to your iPhone via Bluetooth. The firmware should update in a few minutes. You can check by going into Settings and at the top you should see a tab for the APP settings. Tap that and scroll down to the case information where you can see the Firmware version.

I did this with both my APP2 and Powerbeats Pros and they were both updated to their respective new firmwares in about 5 minutes.

Just got this response from Apple Support in addition to an AirPods Max question but they still kept going to help me update my AirPods Pro 2 and 3's.

1. Make sure your AirPods are within Bluetooth range of their companion iOS, iPadOS, or macOS device.
2. Then listen to music or other audio content with the AirPods for at least 30 seconds.
3. Put the AirPods back in the Charging Case and close the lid.
4. Use the Lightning cable to connect the Charging Case to power. Wait 30 minutes. Then reconnect the AirPods to the iOS, iPadOS, or macOS device that they are paired to.

Please note: The lid of the AirPods Charging Case needs to be closed during the entire process. If it's opened at any time, the update is interrupted and it starts over.

Once the lid is closed the Bluetooth connection is lost. So how does it update? 🤔

So far this has worked for me.

1. Listen to something for about a minute.
2. Put the airpods back in the case.
3. Plug the airpods into a power source.
4. Keep the lid open.
5. Check back in 10-15 minutes.

Update: Ordered a new iPad (9th gen) and airpods finally updated the firmware almost right away..

So yes, you will need a newer device with iOS 16 to get them to update.
Also after updating, my iPod with iOS 15 wouldn't recognize the airpods anymore so had to reconnect/reset and now works and shows firmware 5B58.

Audio drift issue is gone but noise cancellation is weaker... 😥
