Shipments of Apple's higher-end AirPods Pro wireless earbuds are expected to equal those of its second-generation AirPods by the end of the year, according to industry sources (via DigiTimes).

Apple's shipments for AirPods Pro have been growing steadily since its launch in October 2019, likely to equal those of AirPods 2 by the end of 2020, an encouraging development for SiP substrate suppliers including Taiwan's Nan Ya PCB and Korean makers, the sources said. SiP is likely to become the mainstream technology for AirPods, the sources continued.
Seven months after launching updated AirPods, Apple unveiled AirPods Pro, featuring an all-new in-ear design and several improvements over the regular AirPods, including active noise cancellation, improved sound quality, and water and sweat resistance.
Those new features inevitably came with an additional cost, with AirPods Pro priced at $249, compared to second-generation AirPods starting at $159. That hasn't put off consumers, however. Indeed, Apple accounted for nearly half of all sales of true wireless earbuds in 2019, and those sales are expected to grow to 82 million units this year, according to Counterpoint Research.

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who often reliably predicts Apple's product plans, Apple is working on a second-generation version of the ‌AirPods Pro‌ that will go into mass production into the fourth quarter of 2021 to the first quarter of 2022, suggesting no ‌AirPods Pro‌ refresh in 2020 or early 2021.

Kuo has also said that Apple is working on a third-generation version of its lower-end ‌AirPods‌, for a planned rollout in the first half of 2021. The new AirPods are expected to feature a form factor design similar to AirPods Pro, thanks to a more compact system-in-package (SiP) that allows the audio features to be integrated into a more compact casing.

In the meantime, existing AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro owners have more to look forward to with the official release of iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur, when AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro will gain an automatic switching function between Apple devices. For example, if you finish a phone call on your iPhone and pick up your iPad to watch a movie, the AirPods will automatically switch over.
AirPods Pro are also getting a new "spatial audio" feature that promises to deliver a theater-like surround sound experience wherever you are. Apple says spatial audio with dynamic head tracking puts surround sound channels in exactly the right place, even as you turn your head or move your device. This feature will require an iPhone 7 or newer.

And here I am enjoying the hell out of my high-end cabled IEMs.

I might come back to AirPods when the battery issues have been worked out.

I never liked ear buds. More so the wireless kind.

How do people NOT lose at least one of those every 6 months?

It would be a hot mess for me.

I have a set of Bose QC2's I use. It was a horse race between those and Sony's NC offering. I'm just more used to the Bose sound. I don't like the feel of something in my ear, and the headband gives me something to grab on to.

I'm loving my PowerBeats Pro. The clip is a huge selling point to me rather than these in-ear ones. Sound is pretty good too.

I love the AirPods Pro but continue to have issues with noise cancellation which requires me to suck on my AirPods and the left one started having a static issue. Apple accidentally sent the right one so then they sent the left one and so I got both of them replaced this past week. Still need to mail it back before they charge me...but the directions say to put it back into the bigger box it came in and one came in a bag and the other came in a box so I'm confused about what exactly they want me to do and I probably should text them.

Still prefer on ear vs in ear for daily use.

I was the same way, but the Pros with their pressure equalization eliminated the thing I hate most about in ear buds - the pressure most of them create. I’ve had ear issues my whole life and that plugged ear experience was untenable for me. I love the Pros now, although I do wish that there were more options for ear cup sizes, as my ears seem to be in between the big and medium sizes, so neither is the perfect fit.

Go listen to the Airpods Pro microphone tests on youtube. Though I didn't think it could be possible, they are WORSE than even first gen Airpods.

You want to sound like a fish being strangled when talking to people? Airpods Pro are for you just empty your wallet for circa 1909 sound quality.

Have my AirPods Pro. Don’t love them. Between rattlegate, they dropping out whenever you exercise, etc probably wish I hadn’t given up my AirPods 2

Shipments would have to be high to replace all of the failing units. I’m about to send one of mine back for the 5th time.

how old are yours? I’ve got some first gen that I expected to last longer, but now they go out within minutes when I’m on a call and barely last the length of an album...

I had to give up on the AirPod Pro's. Within hours I developed an allergic reaction to the silicone ear tips which I had never had with other ear tips. I had to seek medical treatment. If you go online to the Apple Forum discussions you can see this is a common problem for many. I had to go back to the older plastic ones after my ear canals healed. Apple still will not admit they have a materials issue despite numerous filed complaints. I am sure it will quietly be changed in future models without any acknowledgement.

I’ve been feeling the same way about giving up my Air Pods 2. The Air Pods Pro keep falling out of my ears even though I’ve changed the tips. I’m using the smallest size which is the best fit out of the 3.

Was about to buy a pair for my commute, but as we're working from home I don't care about noise cancellation so my AirPods 1th gen are just fine. When they'll stop working I'll buy something in-ear so AirPods Pro may be a good candidate, but no rush, battery life is still good.

We aren't all as irresponsible as you, I guess.

Nice to know the whole user base here, lead by your perfection and attention to detail are better than I am.

I hope your hubris keeps you warm at night. Pardon me now, my car is being repossessed and I'm about to quit my $8/hr job with no job to replace it. 🙄

The battery life on calls was always short even brand new out the box

had airpods pro since launch. went back to 2nd gen airpods because of the allergic reaction the pros gave me in my ear canals. wish i had never bought them. regular airpods are much more comfortable in my ears and also has better bass/battery. i hope apple will stick to the same design for 3rd gen.
