AirPods prompt on iPhone

What is the purpose of the AirPod prompt on the iPhone every time my iPhone is near? it doesn't seem to pair them when I swipe the prompt or place them in ear, I always have to go to Settings > Bluetooth. What am doing wrong or not understanding? 🙈

Are they real AirPods? Not to sound rude or anything.... but I had a pair of fakes and a pair of legit ones and my fake ones do exactly what you state.

I never buy 3rd party accessories or products, 100% real from Apple

What OS and iPhone are you using? Could also be a bug that needs to be ironed out, iOS 14 has been throwing some random curveballs recently.

notice it happens on iOS 13 and 14, iPhone 7 and our iPhone 11 Pro using AirPods Gen2 and AirPod Pro
