You need the True Depth camera. That's why it also doesn't work on iPad.
It should sync to other devices though..

I had similar issues, very annoying as well but I moved to a window in my living room and eventually got it working. Obviously needs good light to complete.

The iPad Pro has FaceID and LiDAR so it has True Depth capabilities.
