I want to be able to download torrents overnight and close the lid of my notebook. When I do this apparently the airport shut offs and stops the downloads. I changed a setting in INternet connect to wake to internet or something and I have a hunch that this may only work via the ethernet port and not the airport. Its my 1st Mac and I am loving it so far but I am still learning.

Is there any way to keep torrents going overnight and close the lid?

Wake to Ethernet would be Wake-on-LAN. If your machine goes to sleep torrents will stop. My suggestion is to have the screen sleep to conserve as much power as you can. The machine will still be running though.

Can I make the machine stay awake even after closing the lid?

Normally, no. Normally, the only way it can not be asleep but closed is if you have an external keyboard/display/mouse connected (that's called clamshell mode).

The programs linked above can alter this behavior so it stays awake, but you have to be careful so that you don't accidentally put it in a backpack and move it around awake, for instance. That would not be great.
