I bought an Apple Airport Express 802.11g to lengthen the range of my Apple Airport extreme 802.11n. It does not seem to be working as planned. Do I need to have an Airport Express 802.11n for compatibility sake??

Nope, it should work just fine. I have in my house exactly what you're trying to do. I have an Airport Extreme as my base, and then I have two Airport Expresses as extensions (also for Airplay). One of them is one of the newer N access points, and the other is one of the older G access points. They both work just fine with the Extreme.
