Airport Express not seeing ethernet connection

Hi

I have just got an airport express and I have it connected to my adsl modem via ethernet but the airport express keeps telling me the ethernet cable isnt connected and it isnt showing up on my adsl modem either (ie the light shosing that something is connected to the pro isnt lighting up)

I know it isnt my adsl modem or the cable because when I connect my macbook pro via the cable to the adsl modem it works fine. So do I have a airport with a fault ethernet port or have I missed something in the set up?
