Airport express question

So I got verizon FIOS and my current netgear 3000WL with ddwrt is only B/G and my 25mbps speeds cannot be reached on this particular router. So my idea was to get an airport express. How does the airport express assign IP addresses? Does it have its own DHCP server or does it allow my current router to assign IP's. I am wondering because of port forwarding, which might be difficult if the express has its own DHCP server.

The express has its own dhcp server that can be disabled via the airport utility app.

I've never had a port forwarding issue with the airport express running its on dhcp. There are also options in the airport software to implement port forwarding. Some apps like Transmission can automatically do this so there is no need to set the router to do it.
