AirPort Express super slow to connect

Lake Weyba on the sub-tropical Sunshine Coast :)
My older model AP Express takes a frustratingly long time to connect to or be picked-up by my all-Mac network.
It will be on & showing green but take up to 20 minutes before iTunes or AirPort Utility will recognise it.
Anyone have any ideas about what this is all about or how to remedy it?
